Wimbledon Day 3 - The Serbian story

Ivanovic won a match that was shall we say - up in the air.  At match point against her she hit a ball that clipped the top of the net and went straight up.  Her heart was in her throat as the ball came down on the side of Dechy and Ana would live to play another day in the Wimbledon 2008 tourney.  The match went to a third set where Ana won 10 to 8.  It took over 3 hours to complete.

Novak Djokovic, on the other hand, was not so fortunate.  He ran into a player who has the ability to beat anyone.  Marat Safin can win the big games.  Djokovic did not play well.  He seemed to throw in a double fault at the critical times - including match point. Did I say Djokovic did not play well.  Safin did play the match he needed to play keep the pressure on today's glamour boy of tennis.  He served well at times and rarely double faulted.  Djokovic had only 4 aces with 10 double faults while Safin had 7 aces compared with 3 double faults.  Safin also made his service returns deep to keep Novak off balance and under pressure.  I wouldn't say that Safin looked like he could beat King Roger with his display of tennis but he might get the boost he needs to give Roger a battle if they play.  It reminded me of last year when Venus played Maria.  Venus did not look well at the beginning but as Maria double faulted and grew unsure of herself Venus grew stronger.  She went on from there to blow through the field hoist the trophy.  It will be interesting to see how far Marat goes in this one.
